Joseph Stalin was born on December 18, 1878 as Josef Vissarionovich Dujgashvili in Gori, Georgia (then a part of the Russian Empire). After he left college, he joined a revolutionary group called the Bolsheviks, who believed in the system of Marxist Communism, led by Vladimir Lenin. After Lenin's death in 1924, he won complete control of the Communist Party. During the mid to late 1920s, he and fellow communist Trotsky had tensions between each other due to disagreements. As part of his plan, he had his secret police to chase Trotsky out of the country, forcing him to live in exile. By the late 1920s, he finally had complete control of the Soviet Union. During the time of his rule, he manipulated people into his own beliefs and had secret police that killed or imprisoned those who opposed him or try to expose the truth. He can connect with Jack of Lord of the Flies because, like Jack, he manipulated people to go with what he believed. Jack also refused to go with Ralph's way of things, similar to the tensions between Stalin and Trotsky. This is noticable when Ralph tells Jack and the boys that "[t]here was a ship. . . you said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out" (Golding 70)! Stalin also coerced people to comply wit beliefs, just like Jack did with Samneric, forcing them to join as "[they] lay looking up in quiet terror" (182). He also changed many rules of communism, which is a near allusion to Jack's dismissal of Ralph's rules when he says, "Bollocks to the rules" (91)!
